Activity 3
Case Study-Conflict Between Co-workers
Rob and Mike have been co-workers for several years. Although they work in similar roles, Mike is quiet by nature and Rob tends to treat Mike as a subordinate. Their manager has assigned the two to work on a project together and their first deadline involves completing a proposal in three weeks. Although they have devoted a significant amount of time to the project and get off to a strong start, their progress is barely on schedule. Rob suggests to Mike that they work late for the next week to complete the proposal but Mike does not want to give up his personal time.
Questions:
1) What needs and interests are at play for each worker?
2) What assumptions might be being made?
3) What strategies can Rob and Mike use to resolve their conflict?
